This years annual Council Pinewood Derby Championship Race is scheduled for February 27th at the Fairmont Wal-Mart Supercenter.

Race Inspection Points


1.      ONLY the Official BSA Pinewood Derby Kit may be used to make your car. This includes the body, wheels, and axles. No substitutions may be made.

2.      Cars made for previously run Pack races will not qualify. All cars must have been made for this year's races (must be verified through Pack race procedures).

3.      Wheel bearing, washers, bushing, or springs are prohibited.

4.      Wheels must be attached with the words BSA PINEWOOD DERBY facing out.

5.      Wheels may be smoothed lightly, but the original shape shall not be altered, such as ‘wafering' or ‘crowning'.

6.      Wheels must be positioned so that all wheels touch the track at all times.

7.      Use of glue or cement is permitted and suggested for axle pins.

8.      Cars are not to have any moving parts.

9.      No loose or hazardous materials of any kind are permitted in or on the car.

10.  Do not tape or otherwise attach anything to the bottom of the car.  Car must clear track runner  (1/4" clearance required)

Weight and Dimensions

11.  Weight may not exceed 5.0 ounces or 141.745 grams, per official scales at race day.

12.  Weights must be permanently mounted.

13.  The overall length of the car may not exceed 7 inches.

14.  The overall width of car may not exceed 2¾ inches.

15.  Changing the position of the axles is prohibited.

16.  Car width at the wheels may not be modified.

17.  Any details added to the car must fall under these limits.


18.  Powdered graphite is the only acceptable lubricant, and may only be applied prior to race check-in. Once the car is checked in, no lubricant may be applied and the car will only be handled by race officials.

19.  No grease, oil, or silicone spray is allowed on cars.


Race Procedures

1.      Four races will be conducted on Saturday, February 27th at the Fairmont WalMart.

2.      One first place, second place and third place winner from each den (Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos) of every Pack in the Council is eligible to compete.  That's right this year the top THREE winners from each division at the pack level will have an opportunity to race.

3.      The Scout must be present to race.

4.      Each Scout will arrive for check in and have his car inspected (see Race Inspection Points).

6.      The car will be assigned an official race number and will be handed over to the Pit Crew to be placed in the Car Corral, where the car will remain up until and immediately following each race in which the Scout participates.

7.      Once the car is checked in, no lubricant may be applied and the car will only be handled by race officials.

8.      No work may be done on cars after weigh in and cars are in pit area.

9.      The Pit Crew will take each car to the Starter for placement on the track. The Pit Crew will also remove each car from the finish line and replace it to the Car Corral.

10.  If any minor repairs need to be made during the race, the Pit Crew will complete these repairs, such as a wheel falling off.

11.  No race will not be held up for repairs, or for glue to dry. If for example, the wheel still falls off during the heat, that car comes in last and will wait for the next heat to compete again.

12.  Each heat of each race will be determined by a randomized computer system and judged by that computer system by time to the thousandth of a second to ensure fairness to all competitors.

13.  All decisions made by Race Officials are final.
