Shooting Sports Explorer Post Open House Print
Tuesday, October 11 2016, 6:00pm - 8:00pm

Looking for Fun in an Outdoor Shooting Sports Experience?

If you are interested in developing firearm safety practices and learning to shoot rifles, shotguns and pistols, you should consider joining the Explorers.   The Mason Dixon Rifle Club, on the Tyrone Road in Morgantown, WV, is working with the Boy Scouts of America to sponsor Explorer Club and Post for middle-school age through high school age for boys and girls in the Monongalia and Preston County area.
The purpose of the Club and Post is to provide boy and girls with supervised experiences in safe recreational opportunities in shooting sports, and help them enhance their shooting skill.

The Exploring Program has two age group categories. EXPLORER CLUB: If you are a 6th, 7th, or 8th grader, you will be in an Explorer Club. EXPLORER POST: If you are at least 14 (and have completed the 8th grade) or 15 to 20 years of age, you will be in an Explorer Post. Both the Explorer Club and Explorer Post will meet at the same time and place. Dues for either the Club or the Post will be $30, which will maintain your membership for the remainder of 2016 and for all of 2017.

The Club and Post will meet one evening per month and each meeting will provide hands-on experience in some element of shooting sports.  The diversity of topics will include Hunter Safety Training, firearms safety training, 22 cal. small bore rifle shooting, shotgun shooting, antique firearm shooting, and exposure to adult professionals in natural resource, engineering, science, and conservation careers. Many youth who have participated in this club have gone on to college in natural resources, science, and engineering disciplines, and have become members of the club contingent to national rifle competitions at Camp Perry Ohio.

The organizational meeting and open house will be Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at the Mason Dixon Rifle Club Meeting Room at 6 pm. At the meeting attendees will be able to view and experience precision 22 rifles, sporting 22 rifles, and other sporting firearms and hear about potential topics of experience that can be planned and scheduled by the youth.  The attendees can also have fun safely shooting 22 sporting rifles on the outdoor range. Representatives of natural resources careers, engineering, science, computer science, and business will be present and assist the youth in planning their experiences. But this is just a start. Parents will be expected to participate and join in the fun too! A closer exposure to shooting sports, hunter safety training, and associated adult professionals will spur additional areas the youth can explore.

Dues will be $30 per year valid from signup through 2017. It will include insurance for all club and post activities and participants. Additional reasonable expenses will be incurred for ammunition, targets and other supplies used during club activities. Checks should be brought to the open house payable to “MAC-BSA” and be accompanied by a completed application form for youth. Youth applicants under 18 must have their parent’s signatures on their applications. The youth application form is available at: http://www.exploring.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/EXPL-Youth-App-619579.pdf
