Historical Cemetery Clean-Up Project Print
From Wednesday, July 22 2015

Every day

My name is Randy Upton. My two nephews are local Boy Scouts. This summer my family is having a Upton Family Reunion in Pennsylvania. Two years ago, while tracing family history, I discovered that my five great grandfather was Samuel Upton. I found his grave at Gilboa Cemetery in Marion County, West Virginia.

According to historical records, a 10-rod square (5/8 acre) piece between properties originally purchased and settled on by Lindsay Boggess, Sr. (1810) & Samuel Upton (1811) was deeded on their behalf on February 15, 1859 by current owners Lindsey Boggess, Jr. & Elias Dudley to the trustees of Giboah [sic] meeting house for use as a burying ground.

When I visited last year, the cemetery was largely overgrown with saplings and vines. Most grave stones were in good condition, but needed to be cleaned. Several stones need to be re-set. A couple of the oldest stones are well worn and a some need further repairs. With the permission of John Boggess, during the week of July 22 - 24, my nephews and I plan to clean up the cemetery. My nephew wanted me to see whether this effort would be something his fellow scouts in West Virginia would be interested in doing as a scout project.

Thank you,
Randy Upton
